The cover story is an interview of Amtrak's vice-chairman, Michael Dukakis. Dukakis was the governor of Massachusetts and the 1988 Democratic Nominee for president. He gives an insightful view of Amtrak during these tough times.  

The issue also features an article about the rise of short line freight railroads after the deregulation of the rail industry in 1980. Train Magazine also investigates Amtrak's current financial troubles and threat to shut down. Ian Keyworth, a long-time staff writer, contributes an article about train safety in the United Kingdom. 

Extra Content Feature: An article on a new space train that NASA is building on the International Space Station with a graphic and a NASA simulation of the train.
