MBTA Commuter Railroad To Switch Hands
On December 13, the MBTA Board announced that it has chosen Massachusetts Bay
Commuter Railroad as its new commuter rail service provider. The new provider is
a consortium of Canada's Bombardier of North America, European railroad company,
Connex, and a Boston transportation consulting firm led by former MBTA general
manager James O'Leary. The five-year contract that begins on July 1 is
worth $1.07 billion.
Rail analysts and MBTA officials believe that this new consortium will have a
chance to prove its value by operating the MBTA, which is the fifth-largest
commuter rail line in the country, carrying 146,000 riders per weekday.
Other than a superficial employee uniform change, the new operator plans on
cutting employees and having pay raises.
